Semtex
It's been said that the backbone
of Hip-Hop is the DJ. If that
statement rings true, then DJ Semtex
is perhaps connected to every bone
in the body of Hip-Hop. For years,
Semtex has made it his mission to
break artists, records, radio shows,
and his undeniable skills for rockin'
a party.
Recently named the Most Influential
Radio DJ in the New Nation Power
100, Semtex plays an instrumental
part in Dizzee Rascal's continued
success, hosting two primetime
Hip-Hop shows on the BBC’s digital
station, 1Xtra has him interviewing
the biggest names in Hip-Hop as well
as breaking exclusives on a regular
basis and his blog is one of the
most popular sites within the
Hip-Hop world. Semtex has made it
his mission to bridge the gap
between Hip-Hop's starting point,
the US, and one of its hottest
battlegrounds, the UK. Assisting in
key relationships, with Akon signing
Sway to his Kon Live Label and Kanye
West signing Mr. Hudson to his GOOD
Music label imprint.
His company Semtex Media worked the
promotional campaign for Dizzee's
Certified Gold Maths + English
album, as well as the Single "Dance
With Me", which resided at the
Number One spot on the charts for
four weeks. Semtex Media consults
blue-chip corporations, global
brands and continues to market some
of Hip-Hop/R&B's highest selling
acts including Kanye West, Jay-Z and
Rihanna.
Throughout his career Semtex has
been standing at the forefront of
technology. While wax manipulation
has morphed into CDs and Serato,
Semtex maintains the purity of the
craft while allowing innovation to
surround it. A lucrative partnership
with Pioneer enabled him to get his
hands on the latest DVD/ DJ
technology, from which he created
the first ever visual mix for
commercial release via Universal.
Semtex brings to light the dream
that many involved in Hip-Hop hope
to achieve someday – the title of
Hip-Hop entrepreneur. It isn't
everyday that people like Kanye West
say, "DJ Semtex helped me launch my
career" and Semtex is proof that
focus and love of the craft can
travel a long way…
Check Semtex live on 1Xtra: Tuesdays
12am to 2am, Fridays 10pm to 12am,

Ras Kwarme
Ras Kwame’s influence on the UK
Music scene as a whole is not one to
be exaggerated; Ras is a leader in
representing the UK urban scene and
encouraging the UK’s new music
talent.
The London born, Ghana raised disc
spinner moved to London and began
his career some 15 years ago as a DJ
at University whilst studying
Economics and founded Sugar Shack
record store/recording studio in
1997.
He has a great understanding and
experience of the business element
in the music industry as he formed
Baby Shack Record label, which was
hugely successful in underground
terms as the label specialized in UK
garage, responsible for some massive
garage anthems including ‘Bump ‘n’
Grind’.
Ras launched onto the radio scene in
2002 with his 100% homegrown music
show on BBC 1Xtra and when someone
was needed to fill the late John
Peel’s influential Radio 1 slot in
2005, Ras Kwame was brought in!
Still to this day, inclusion on his
award winning BBC 1Xtra and Radio 1
shows have proven to be a crucial
first step in an artist career and
recently released a CD compilation
representing the best UK music,
Urban Goodies.
Ras has presented a range of music
shows over the years including
Channel U, Trouble TV and MTV Base.
More recently he can be seen hosting
the BBC’s legendary ‘Live’ sessions
which showcases the hottest acts in
the UK black music scene at the
world famous BBC Maida Vale Studios.
These include acts from Lemar,
Dizzie Rascal, Kano, Taio Cruz and
many more.

Misterjam
Forget trying to nail MistaJam to
a genre for he’s a DJ who’s from the
school of thought where only those
who’ve perfected the art of mixing
need apply. If it has a big beat,
bassline and melody, chances are
Jam’s in it.
Playing at some of the finest clubs
around the world, his fearless
approach to delivering the ultimate
blend has seen his army of
supporters grow rapidly. Not bad for
the now 26 year old Nottingham boy,
Pete Dalton, who started in the game
proper at 14, cutting his teeth
working with local youth
soundsystems, playing multi-genre
sets, working with Nottingham rap
crews and graduating to playing
house parties, youth clubs,
carnivals and such. Doing all this
while studying for his GCSE’s and
holding down weekend jobs, including
stints at a café in the budget
clothing store C&A and music shop
MVC (although he accepts no
responsibility for both chains
closing down) goes some way in
explaining his strong work ethic.
Continuing to keep it really real by
writing for magazines such as the
now defunct Grandslam & Big Daddy,
becoming go-to DJ for acts from both
the US and UK, and putting on many
events in Nottingham along with his
then business partner Joe Buhdha,
there’s no denying Jam is a grafter.
Joining BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2005
after being talent scouted at one of
his own Nottingham events to host an
overnight Thursday night Hip Hop
show, his attempts at injecting
humour and taking musical risks
didn’t go amiss. Moving up the
ladder onto other, higher profile
radio slots to show the multi-genre
skills he had since his youth
soundsystem days has subsequently
led to the peak time evening slot he
now holds. MistaJam is now regarded
as one of the go-to-men for breaking
new music in British radio.
