Jades Last Days....

In an emotional meeting, her sons Bobby, five, and Freddie, four, brought flowers to her bedside for what was supposed to be an early Mother's Day party. But the 27-year-old, who was heavily sedated and exhausted as she nears the end of her battle with terminal cancer, could only muster a few words before falling asleep.

The Big Brother star's mother, Jackiey, yesterday said Goody was clinging on to life "hour by hour" after her condition deteriorated over the weekend. Goody, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer last summer, discharged herself from hospital last week so she could die at home. She told her sons then: "Mummy's going to heaven soon. I'm going to be a star up in the sky, so when you are looking up you will be able to see me and know I'm there, always looking over you." When Freddie asked why his mother was so sleepy, Goody replied: "Because the angels are calling Mummy."

Her publicist Max Clifford said that Goody had hoped to spend time with loved ones at her home in Upshire, Essex, over the weekend, but it had to be cancelled because of her rapidly ailing health. Instead, the boys spent most of yesterday afternoon playing in the garden with Goody's new husband, Jack Tweed, 21, who had joined other family members at her bedside.

Jade Goody married her fiance

Goody, 27, who found fame after appearing in the show `Big Brother' in 2002, wed fiance Jack Tweed in a lavish ceremony and reception at a country house hotel north of London, her publicist Max Clifford confirmed.

Their big day - media rights were sold for a reported STG1 million - was organised in the nine days since Tweed proposed in hospital after her terminal diagnosis.

It was a "happy ceremony with lots of tears, lots of smiles, lots of laughter ... (a) very beautiful, very moving service'', Clifford said. He added that the bride had taken painkillers to get her through the day.

Goody has defended her decision to live out in the public eye what will likely be her last weeks, saying the money she earned would help provide for her two young sons, aged five and four. "I've lived in front of the cameras. And maybe I'll die in front of them,'' the star, who has lost her hair after chemotherapy for cervical cancer, told last week's News of the World newspaper.

"I know some people don't like what I'm doing but at this point I really don't care what other people think. Now, it's about what I want.'' Goody's approach has prompted an agonised debate in Britain about the rights and wrongs of such a public death.

Jade Goody Returns home..

A documentary about her illness goes out tonight on Living TV. In it, cancer-ravaged Jade describes “fighting for her femininity” as her wedding approaches.

SUCKING a “lollipop” of painkillers, Jade Goody was wheeled from her cancer hospital to an ambulance yesterday — after the dying Big Brother star begged: “Please take me home.”

The brave bride-to-be — who has been given just weeks to live — declared: “I’ve had enough here. I want to see grass and rolling fields.” Too frail to stand, she was taken by wheelchair from her room at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London’s Chelsea.

Jade, who hid her bald head under a scarf, had earlier told a friend how she pined for the countryside around her Essex home. She said: “I’ve got a lovely view from my bedroom. I can get more ill here — or more ill there.” The ambulance carefully took her the 20 miles to her house in Upshire. Mum-of-two Jade — whose public battle with her disease has gripped the nation — smiled and managed a weak wave as she was lifted out. She went home as PM Gordon Brown yesterday paid tribute to her, declaring: “The whole country will be worried and anxious about her health.”

Chantelle slams claims others could be Maisie's father

Tearful teenage mum Chantelle has hit back at claims that two other teenagers - and not 13 year old Alfie - may be little Maisie's father. Baby-faced dad Alfie (13) only had sex with Chantelle (15) once before she became pregnant with daughter Maisie. Now two other boys from her area are saying that they also had sex with the young teenager and could be the baby's rightful dad. Trainee chef Richard (16) said “I know I could be the father. Everyone thinks I am. My friends all tell me that baby has my eyes— even my mum thinks so.” Richard said that Chantelle also slept with several boys in the neighbourhood: “To be honest, any one of my mates could be the dad.” Schoolboy Tyler is also worried that he could be Maisie’s father: “I slept with Chantelle in her bed about nine months ago and I’m really worried I could be the father. I hope it’s not me. All my mates have been teasing me about it but this isn’t funny, it’s serious.” But a tearful Chantelle hit back at the claims and told The Sun that she has only ever slept with Alfie: "I love Alfie. I lost my virginity to him." She added: "We decided to start a physical relationship because we love each other. There has been no one else." Chantelle's mother Penny, 38, slammed the vicious rumours as “horrible”. She said: “I have never seen her so upset. To know that people are saying things like that about her is destroying her.”

Rescuers were called to the A38 at Haldon Hill, near Exeter, at about 2100 GMT on Thursday after weather deteriorated suddenly. A few miles west, the Army was called in to pick up about 60 people stuck on the A386 Many drivers spent the night in emergency centres. The Highways Agency said all Severn Crossings were closed after ice began falling from the top of bridge structures onto cars.

Snow still causes problems !

The heavy snow that disrupted the lives and businesses of millions of people this week will continue to cause problems as treacherous weather moves across the country, forecasters have warned.

Northern Scotland, Wales and south-western parts of England and the south coast are at the greatest risk of further snow later in the week, according to the Met Office. Conditions in the areas worst hit by Monday's snow – the most widespread in the UK for 18 years – are likely to remain dangerous as the roads turn icy with a drop in temperature.

The Highways Agency said most big roads and motorways were open and clear yesterday but advised postponing all but essential journeys in the worst-affected areas.

Our Eskimo Dance event which was built alongside Wiley was easily Londons biggest grime event returns after the long absence.

The event grew faster and bigger than was expected and Eski Boy Wiley grew with it. Arguably this event gave stepping stones to the likes of Dizzee Rascal & Kano.

Many mixed cd's circulate the underground scene with the echo of crowd interaction. Ladies and men chanting lyrics and tickets selling out ridiculosly fast. Many people awaited the experience but it was hard to find with the event going awol!

New Years Eve Is Fast Approaching

Latest Update: Monday 29 December

Mortgage Approvals At All Time Low

Tuesday 23 December

The number of mortgages approved for house purchase has dived by more than 60% during the past year to hit a new record low. Just 17,773 loans were approved for people buying a home during November, 14% fewer than in October and 60.7% less than in November last year, the British Bankers' Association said. There was also a steep drop in the number of people remortgaging during the month, with just 29,798 loans for people switching to a better deal in the pipeline, down from 52,452 the previous month. The figure, which was the lowest for eight years, was also less than half the level for November last year. The number of approvals for people releasing equity from their home or taking out a mortgage on a buy-to-let property also continued to fall during November to 22,295, 44% less than in the same month of 2007. David Dooks, BBA director of statistics, said: "The 1.5% November reduction in Bank rate caused lenders to reassess product ranges and borrowers to reconsider future borrowing costs, so consequently there was another drop in market activity. "Volumes of mortgage approvals reached new lows and, with house prices still falling, the encouragement of lower costs had not filtered through by the month-end, largely because people remain concerned about the impacts of the rapidly slowing economy on their personal finances." Mortgage lending continued to fall during the month, with net lending, which strips out redemptions and repayments, reaching just 2.9 billion, a third less than in November last year. Total advances of £11.07 billion were at their lowest level since January 2002. The figures are unsurprising given the ongoing slump in the housing market, while the tougher lending criteria being adopted by lenders is leading to many people remaining on the standard variable rate when they come to the end of a mortgage deal, rather than remortgaging to a new one.

Shoppers flocked in their droves to snap up last-minute bargains ahead of Christmas, figures suggested. As stores cut prices by up to 70%, millions were tempted to part with their cash, with customer numbers up this weekend compared with last year.

Nationally, shops were 7.1% busier on Saturday than on the Saturday before Christmas last year, according to retail analysts Springboard.

Jace Tyrell, of the New West End Company, representing more than 600 traders in London's Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street, said it had asked Springboard to provide the day's figures, which revealed that around 600,000 people had visited the West End. He said: "Yesterday was an exceptional day.

It was heaving and shoppers were definitely spending. "The West End was up 17.9% from the same time last year and Oxford Street was up 21.5%. "The national figure was 7.1% up. "It's interesting because the week was actually down by 1.6% so I think people got paid on Friday and went out yesterday."

Despite the promising signs, however, the jury is still out on whether the next few days will provide the boost beleaguered retailers need.

It is make or break time for traders after many reported worryingly reduced sales due to the credit crunch.

The evidence points to some savvy shoppers delaying purchases until the last moment in the hope of further price reductions and early sales bargains.

Shoppers seek last-minute bargains

The Government is preparing a radical plan to lend direct to struggling firms in a fresh attempt to keep business going through the recession, it was reported.

The Daily Telegraph reported that small firms taking out a bank loan will be able to request "matching funding" from the Government, which will effectively be acting as a bank itself.

The paper said that, in practice, the Government is likely to provide more than half the funds firms need, with ministers expecting the banks to come up with no more than 25%.

Officials at the Department for Business and Enterprise said Leader of the House Harriet Harman referred to the scheme when she stood in for Gordon Brown at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday but were unable to confirm details.

Ms Harman told MPs that a new small business loan guarantee scheme would be established in January. "It's true to say that, while lending figures are starting to show increasing lending to small businesses, there are still businesses having problems," she said.

The move appears to reflect the continuing frustration among ministers that businesses are still finding it difficult to get the credit they need, despite the Government's £37 billion bail-out of the banks.

The proposed new scheme, which, it is said, has still to be finalised, would enable the Government to get round the problem by cutting out the banks and providing firms with the credit directly.

Bomb plot doctor jailed

An NHS doctor has been jailed for at least 32 years for plotting to murder hundreds of people in terrorist car bomb attacks on London and Glasgow. Bilal Abdulla, 29, was unmasked as a terrorist who wanted to murder innocent civilians in revenge for fighting in his native Iraq. A jury at Woolwich Crown Court found him guilty of conspiracy to murder and to cause explosions on Tuesday at the end of a nine-week trial. Mr Justice Mackay told him he was "religious extremist and a bigot" who held the most extreme form of Islamist views. The judge said: "Many people felt and still feel strong opposition to the invasion of Iraq. You do, you are sincere in that and you have strong reasons for holding that view. "But you were born with intelligence and you were born into a privileged and well-to-do position in Iraq and you are a trained doctor." The judge said Abdulla's radical religious and political beliefs meant he continued to be a danger to the British public. Jordanian Dr Mohammed Asha, 28, was acquitted of any involvement in the terrorist conspiracy on Tuesday. But he has not been released from custody and faces deportation after being told his presence "is not conducive to the public good". In a statement read by his solicitor Tayab Ali, Dr Asha said his arrest and subsequent trial "obliterated" his life. He said: "Finally, justice has been done - a jury has cleared me of any involvement in these allegations. The jury had no doubts whatsoever that I am an innocent man. "Even though I was acquitted, justice has not been done and is not being done. I am still in HMP Belmarsh."

A serial rapist has been found guilty of dismembering Briton Lucie Blackman in Japan and abandoning her body. But millionaire property developer Joji Obara was acquitted of murdering and raping the 21-year-old bar hostess from Kent, who had been working at a Tokyo nightclub when she disappeared in 2000. Tokyo High Court reportedly found there was insufficient evidence to convict him on these charges. But Obara was handed a life sentence for a series of attacks on women. The High Court went further on Tuesday than the lower court did in its 2007 conviction, ruling that Obara dismembered and abandoned Miss Blackman's body. Miss Blackman's father Tim, who lives on the Isle of Wight, welcomed the ruling. He said: "We view this result with delight. "Although the result is not the absolute decision we had hoped for it is still an obvious recognition of guilt. After such a long time it is clear that it was necessary for this protracted process to get any degree of result and some form of justice for Lucie, but it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth." Miss Blackman, from Sevenoaks in Kent, a former flight attendant, went to Japan in May 2000 and used her earnings to pay for trips around Asia. Her remains were found near Obara's beachside condominium outside Tokyo in February 2001 following an extensive search. Mr Blackman was criticised by his ex-wife after he accepted a "condolence payment" in 2006 from a friend of Obara. Jane Steare, who said she had turned turned down an offer of around £200,000 herself, accused her ex-husband of "betrayal" for accepting the offer, which she described as "blood money". Condolence money is recognised under Japanese law. Mr Blackman defended the decision and said a substantial amount of the money would go to the Lucie Blackman Trust, which promotes personal safety.

Alexandra Burke banned from a boyfriend

Burke, who is tipped to have the Christmas number one, says the Girls Aloud singer has urged her to steer clear from romance and concentrate on her music career instead. She said: "Cheryl told me to keep away from men. She wants me to concentrate on music without any distractions. "There will be no romance – I'm all about the music." The 20-year-old, of Islington, North London, broke up with boyfriend D'Andre West before her X Factor stint. Alex, still buzzing after Saturday night's win, said: "Cheryl and I have united and become strong together, definitely. She is now my friend more than my mentor. "She's proud of me and I'm proud of her being my friend. She is an inspiration to me – she's a young woman who's gone through the same situation I'm in. "She's taught me so much and I'm so grateful that she's in my life." Cole has even given Burke a necklace with angel wings and a garnet stone which she vows to wear every day. She added: "Cheryl's so talented. If I only have a tiny bit of the success Girls Aloud have had, I'll be happy." Burke is now poised for a Christmas number one with Hallelujah, which is already the most downloaded X Factor single in the history of the show. It is available in shops on Wednesday.

Jennifer Aniston has posed naked for the cover of American GQ magazine. The 39-year-old actress shows off a tanned toned figure as she sits smiling provocatively with her legs crossed and only a red, white and blue tie covering her nipples on the front of the January 2009 issue, USA special.

In an equally provocative interview Jennifer spoke frankly about her relationship with John Mayer and joked she and ex-husband Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie go on holiday together. The former Friends star said of 31-year-old musician John: "I am not having his baby. And I have not popped the question.

"What I can say is that I had no idea what an extraordinary musician he is and it's just great to sit and be witness to that." Jen poked fun at her recent interview in Vogue where she had a dig at Angelina. She joked: "The funny thing is, people don't realise we all go away to The Hamptons on the weekends. That'd be hysterical: I've got Zahara on my hip, and Knox..." The actress is currently working on new film Pumas about two aspiring Cougars which she describes as "sort of a female Wedding Crashers".

"It is so a comment on the sexual double standard, and what's been ironic is how hard it's been to get this movie made," she says. "Studios want it, but they are afraid of Middle America. They'd want to change it; they're saying, 'Oh, you can't do that, people just can't imagine you...' I think all women on some level just want to rage against the machine," she adds.

Woolworths are to launch a closing-down sale after administrators said they had so far failed to find a buyer for the ailing retailer. Up to 25,000 jobs at the firm's 813-strong retail chain are under threat as the hunt for a rescue continues. Deloitte warned on Wednesday that some stores could close before the end of December if no offers for the business emerged.

Woolworths has been in business for almost a century but was forced to call in administrators two weeks ago as debts and losses mounted in a worsening high street climate. Deloitte - which has already launched a massive sale with up to 50% off toys and gifts to generate cash for creditors - had previously pledged that stores would carry on trading beyond Christmas while a rescue deal was sought.

Reorganisation services partner Neville Kahn said Deloitte was making "every effort" to convert interest in Woolworths into firm offers. "While we are still seeking bids from interested parties, Christmas is clearly the busiest time of the year for retailers and it is prudent to do all we can to sell existing stock. "By moving to a store closing sale and further discounting the stock, we are maximising the sales potential that this period offers." Deloitte has already cut 450 jobs at Woolies' head office and support operations in London and Castleton, Rochdale. If stores close before the end of December, the administrator said it would consult employees to discuss the support available in the event of redundancies.

Deloitte has held talks with the likes of former Woolies chief executive Sir Geoff Mulcahy and Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis but no deals have been struck.

Police have arrested 57 people after climate change activists broke into a secure area of Stansted Airport. A spokeswoman said 50 had been accused of aggravated trespass, three had been accused of attempting to gain access to a restricted area, and four had been accused of conspiracy to commit a public nuisance. Protest group Plane Stupid said that, at 3.15am, more than 50 of its campaigners occupied a runway which had been closed for maintenance work. The runway reopened just after 8am but the protest caused the cancellation of 21 flights.A spokeswoman for the Essex airport said passengers should check with airlines before leaving home. Scores of passengers were leaving Stansted, either to return home or to find hotels after being told that flights were cancelled. The terminal was clogged with thousands of people trying to get information about likely delays.

The protest is over the Government's decision to allow the expansion of the airport with a second runway.

Plane Stupid said aviation was the fastest growing source of emissions and already contributed to at least 13% of the UK's carbon budget. It also pointed to plans for a new runway at Heathrow. In a statement, the group said the disruption to flights will prevent "the release of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere".The GMB trade union, which represents workers at Stansted, revealed that it had been pressing the airport authorities to review security because of concerns over the state of the fencing. It said it was now more important than ever to make sure security was tight at all airports in the UK.

HSBC increases mortgage lending

HSBC offered a boost to the beleaguered mortgage market after it revealed it planned to increase lending to UK homeowners by a fifth.

The banking giant will lend up to £15 billion in mortgages in 2009, 20% more than last year and almost double the level seen in 2007. It said it remained open for business, but insisted it would not comprise its lending standards. HSBC's announcement comes amid forecasts that frozen money markets and the slump in the housing market will result in repayments and redemptions outstripping lending next year.

Paul Thurston, HSBC's UK managing director, said: "By some estimates, net mortgage lending in the UK will fall next year, but HSBC has no intention of closing its doors to customers, nor will we compromise our reputation for responsible lending. We remain open for business to the tune of £15 billion." On Saturday, HSBC announced it was making £1 billion of extra funding available to support small businesses in Britain through the recession

A council is to ban fast food outlets from opening within 400m of schools and parks as part of a drive to improve children's health.

Waltham Forest will become the first local authority in the country to impose such rules.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls threw his weight behind the proposals earlier this year - insisting there was "no point" banning junk food in schools if kids could get it nearby. Council leader Clyde Loakes confirmed that the restrictions would go ahead, after a public consultation found 93% backed it.

"That is a really good endorsement," he said. "We would expect the measures to be in place by April.

The role of social services in the life of Shannon Matthews is being closely scrutinised following her mother's conviction for kidnapping her own daughter. Mother-of-seven Karen Matthews, 33, was condemned by police on Thursday as "pure evil" after a judge told her she faces a substantial jail sentence. Later allegations emerged that Matthews children had been placed on the child protection register but later taken off despite concerns about violence in the household and poor living conditions. A BBC documentary team, which was given exclusive access to West Yorkshire Police's investigation, said social workers commissioned a psychological report about Matthews highlighting her "inability to successfully place the children's needs above her own" in December 2003 - three years before Shannon went missing.

The Panorama programme said the report concluded: "Her ability to protect her children is compromised by her inability to successfully place the children's needs above her own. I believe that Karen will require constant monitoring and support throughout the lives of her children." According to the documentary, Matthews' children were removed from the child protection register by the time the report was completed.

The documentary alleged that despite ongoing concerns about violence in the home and the effect this might have on the children "they were never considered at risk of significant harm" and not placed back on the child protection register.

Kirklees Social Services said it was limited in what it could say about the Matthews family for legal reasons. On Thursday Matthews was found guilty of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice at Leeds Crown Court along with her co-accused Michael Donovan. Matthews conspired with Donovan, 40, her partner's uncle, to keep her nine-year-old daughter drugged and imprisoned for 24 days in a desperate plan to claim £50,000 in reward money.

The Bank of England has slashed interest rates by another 1% as policymakers stepped up their battle to stave off a deep recession.

The dramatic percentage point cut takes the cost of borrowing from 3% to 2% - a rate not seen since 1951 and equal to the all-time record low in the UK.

It follows last month's shock 1.5% cut - the biggest for more than 27 years - and comes amid mounting concern that the UK is facing a deep and prolonged recession.

Britain's biggest mortgage lender Halifax confirmed it would pass on the cut to its 600,000 borrowers with base rate tracker deals.

But it is unlikely that all borrowers with standard variable rate mortgages will see the full benefit, despite increasing pressure from the Government.

The Bank said in a statement accompanying its decision that "there remained a substantial risk of undershooting the 2% Consumer Prices Index inflation target".

It added: "In the United Kingdom, business surveys have weakened further and suggest that the downturn has gathered pace.

"Consumer spending and business investment have stalled, while residential investment has continued to fall.

Banking Bill leads Queen's Speech

Gordon Brown has presented a slimmed-down legislative programme for the coming year in a Queen's Speech focusing tightly on measures to help Britain through the economic downturn. The programme for the Prime Minister's last full year before a general election includes 13 new Bills, along with a Constitutional Renewal Bill which will be introduced "when time allows".

The package's centrepiece is a Banking Bill designed to enhance financial stability through measures to reduce the likelihood of banks getting into difficulty, improve the tools available to the authorities when they do and strengthen protection for depositors if they fail.

In an address prepared for her by the Government, the Queen told MPs and peers that ministers' "overriding priority" in the new parliamentary session will be "to ensure the stability of the British economy through the global economic downturn". And she added: "My Government is committed to helping families and businesses through difficult times." The programme represents a scaling back of the draft legislative programme set out by the Prime Minister in May, with less urgent bills dropped or merged to allow ministers more time to address the UK's economic difficulties.

Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that it will give struggling homeowners at least six months before launching repossession action.

The NatWest parent said it was doubling the three-month breathing space currently offered to borrowers who fall behind with mortgage repayments.

News of the move comes days after the Government bought 58% of the bank's shares for £15 billion - effectively bringing it under state control. Stephen Hester, chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland, wrote in the Financial Times that the bank was "conscious that many people face anxiety" about repayments in the tough economic climate.

He said: "In our UK residential mortgage lending, and as a banker to small businesses, we are determined to serve customers well in the difficult times ahead and have commitments to Government that we intend to meet in letter and spirit."It is expected that other banks may also follow suit as the Government calls for greater help from banks for cash-strapped borrowers and businesses.

MPs are also reportedly working on plans for statutory codes of practice in the banking industry, which could replace the current voluntary system. The move by RBS comes amid pressure from Chancellor Alistair Darling to ensure banks do more to help households in the current economic downturn.RBS has already announced that it will guarantee overdraft rates and contracts for its business customers for at least a year. It will also return to "normal" lending levels, as part of the Government's recapitalisation package for the banking sector.

Surviving against the odds ...

Their arms are wrapped around each other as they sleep peacefully. But this picture of serenity is one Faith and Hope's parents might never have seen.

For when Laura Williams was told she was pregnant with Siamese twins, she and her husband Aled, 28, were advised to abort them. Although the survival rate for conjoined babies is very low, the couple, from Shrewsbury, refused on moral grounds.

On Wednesday their girls were delivered by Caesarean section, with a combined weight of 10lb 8oz. Mrs Williams, 18, the youngest woman to give birth to conjoined twins, told The Mail on Sunday: 'They wheeled me in to see them.

Anger mounts over Mumbai attacks...

Another top Indian politician offered to resign on Monday over the Mumbai attacks, which have upset relations with nuclear-rival Pakistan and undermined the government ahead of general elections due by May.

Maharashtra state chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, a member of the ruling Congress party, said on Monday he had offered to resign over the attacks that killed 183 people and locked India's financial capital in a three-day siege

Taxpayers will take a 57.9% stake in Royal Bank of Scotland after investors snubbed its £15 billion share offer, the bank said. The bank's existing shareholders refused to buy the new stock because RBS's shares were trading below the 65.5p offer price announced in October. The Government will step in to buy up the unwanted shares and shore up the bank's ailing finances - leaving taxpayers with a paper loss of almost £2.5 billion. RBS said just 0.24% of the new shares had been taken up by investors - leaving the public to foot the bill for the remainder.  Alongside this £15 billion outlay, the Treasury is pumping in £5 billion in return for preference shares, which come with special conditions such as a ban on dividends. RBS chief executive Stephen Hester said the bank was "grateful" to the Government for its support. "We regret that existing shareholders did not take up their pre-emptive rights but understand that market sentiment toward the banking sector made this uneconomic in the short term," he added.
Mr Hester said his focus would be on rebuilding the business after a tumultuous period in which the bank was brought to its knees by the credit crunch. In August the company unveiled its first loss in 40 years as a public company after suffering writedowns of £5.9 billion as it reported statutory pre-tax losses of £692 million for the first half of 2008."We must put the past behind us and move forward with a clear focus on what we need to do next. We will focus on rebuilding RBS on its powerful customer franchises globally and, in time, deliver the economic returns that all our shareholders expect and deserve," Mr Hester said. RBS is receiving the biggest injection of public funds under the Government's £37 billion bail-out package announced in October. The Treasury is also pumping a total of £17 billion into merging banks Halifax Bank of Scotland and Lloyds TSB, which could leave it with a stake of more than 40% in the combined entity.

The western extension of the London congestion charge area is to be scrapped. The move follows a consultation process in which 67 per cent of those responding - and 86 per cent of businesses - said they wanted the extension to be removed.

London mayor Boris Johnson said he would take the necessary legal steps to scrap the extension, which includes areas such as Kensington and Chelsea, but the earliest it could be removed is spring 2010.

The congestion charge, originally covering just central London, was introduced in February 2003, with the western extension added in February 2007. The charge for cars entering the zone was originally £5 but rose to £8 in July 2005. Mr Johnson said: "During the election I promised Londoners a genuine consultation on the future of the extension. "Londoners have spoken loud and clear, and the majority of people have said that they would like the scheme scrapped. One thing everybody should be assured of is my determination to make it easier for Londoners to get around our great city."

Transport for London (TfL) said it estimated traffic returning to the western extension would result in a small increase in emissions of air pollutants and carbon dioxide. But the increase would be unlikely to have any material effect on measured air quality within the western extension or on the boundary route because of the number of different factors that affect local air quality. The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: "We are delighted to see that common sense has prevailed. "This is an important milestone for many of the capital's hard-pressed businesses and we urge the Mayor to launch a root-and-branch review of the original charging scheme in the central zone.

Uk Tourists delayed ...

British tourists in Thailand were facing terror and turmoil after protesters forced Bangkok airport to cancel all flights. They are among an estimated 3,000 people stranded by an anti-government protest which has led to shooting and bomb explosions close to the airport. The Foreign Office (FO) said some Britons passed through immigration controls, but were unable to board planes and were now having to be looked after by airport officials after being stuck, visa-less, in a "no-man's land" between immigration and aircraft.

The Britons at the airport had to contend with anti-government protesters - some masked and armed with metal rods - swarming into the airport overnight, forcing authorities to cancel all 292 flights on Wednesday.

Passengers had to sleep where they could - on suitcases, luggage trolleys, security conveyor belts and behind vacated check-in counters. One stranded tourist told the BBC: "I don't know what happened to my flight. They won't talk to us. I'm angry and sad, because I have two small children - they're sick, so we want to go home."

Overnight, four bombs exploded near the airport, injuring a number of people. Later, there were reports that the airport had to be evacuated.

Stand-up comic Harry Bedford, 40, from Greenwich, south London, told of the hours of waiting at the airport. He said: "It was very difficult to know exactly what was happening. First they shut down all the TVs, then there was no access to computers. There were no announcements and it was all very confusing and chaotic."

Chancellor Alistair Darling defended his £1 trillion gamble to drag Britain out of recession, insisting that he was doing the "right thing" to support the economy. Mr Darling said it would have been wrong to walk away and leave people to "sink or swim" as he faced questioning over Monday's pre-budget report designed to kick-start the struggling economy with a £20 billion boost.

"It seems only the Conservatives who are saying, as they did in the 1980s and the 1990s, 'just walk away from people, leave them high and dry, let them sink or swim'," he told GMTV. "I just do not think that is right thing to do. People expect the Government to help them. We will be helping people and I fully intend to see that through," he said on GMTV. In a pre-budget report that surprised many with its scope, Mr Darling announced plans to cut VAT, boost tax allowances, and offer more cash to parents and pensioners. But the "fiscal stimulus" will come with a sizeable price tag. Mr Darling admitted that state borrowing would hit £78 billion this year and £118 billion next year, while total national debt will top £1 trillion by 2012-13. Shadow Chancellor George Osborne said that the best way to stimulate the economy was through "radical" cuts in interest rates. "We have got to get lending going in this economy again, you have got to get credit to small businesses, that is where the action is needed, not, frankly, taking a huge risk with the public finances," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. He said that rate cuts should be accompanied by Government measures to ensure that they were passed on by banks to business. "I think you could directly insure - for a premium to protect the taxpayers' interest - lending from banks to businesses to get credit flowing, to keep people in work, to stop businesses folding," he said. "These measures would do far more than a 2.5% cut in VAT - a temporary cut which would be paid for later with massive tax rises coming down the track."

Man found Guilty...

A man has been found guilty of kidnapping, raping and murdering 17-year-old Hannah Foster in Southampton.

Maninder Pal Singh Kohli, 41, was convicted by a jury at Winchester Crown Court more than five years after Hannah was found dead.

BNP fear for their safety...

It's election season in India, and that's bad news for the hapless Congress party. Six states go to the polls in the coming month, in what some experts are calling a bellwether for next year's general election. And though the races are too close to call, some pundits say Congress is likely to fare poorly. But that's not the worst of it. The slack in four of the contests may be taken up by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—a Hindu nationalist organization that's surging in strength in a new, more aggressive form. In an especially worrisome twist, police say they recently uncovered possible links between BJP-associated Hindu nationalist organizations and suspected Hindu terrorists—a first for a mainstream Indian party.

The BJP's renewed appeal can be explained, at least in part, by timing. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is not known for his political acumen, Congress has lost the last eight state elections in a row. Now the worldwide financial crisis has sent inflation spiraling and slowed growth, further damaging the government's chances. The BJP hopes to capitalize on the bad economic conditions when voters head to the polls in Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Rajasthan this month. While nothing's guaranteed, many observers expect Congress to get trounced. "Their machine is in tatters," says Mahesh Rangarajan, a Delhi University political analyst. While that's bad for Congress, it wouldn't necessarily be a problem for India—but for two things. First, the state elections could well forecast the fate of the Congress-led ruling coalition, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), in next nationwide poll, which must take place before May 2009. (The UPA's own rural-development minister recently said the state votes represented a "mini general election.") And second, the BJP has taken a nastier turn since it last led the country in 2004.

New name Captain Fantasic...

A music graduate from Glastonbury could be the holder of the longest name in the world after he legally changed his name to Captain Fantastic Faster than Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Wolverine, Hulk and the Flash Combined.

Nineteen-year-old George Garratt changed his name by deed poll online for ten pounds. He told said that he had originally decided to change his name for a bit of a laugh and, once he had decided upon a superhero theme, has simply added the monikers suggested by his friends to form one huge name.

Garratt was pleasantly surprised to learn that his new name was the longest in the UK and possibly even the world. On the downside, his grandmother hasn’t spoken to him since he changed his name.

In February, a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so she could change her name from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

Other banned names include Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit.

In New Zealand again, last year a couple was banned from naming their baby 4Real, so they chose Superman instead.

In the late 1960s, George Best was arguably the greatest footballer in the world, one of the most famous people in Britain and one of the best paid sportsmen of the day. At the age of 22, he was named European Footballer of the Year as he played an integral role in Manchester United’s 1968 European Cup win.

Having shone spectacularly on European football’s biggest stage at such a young age, few would have believed that 1968 would mark the high point of Best’s life. But over the next six years, Best’s career spiralled out of control as he became immersed in a hedonistic, champagne lifestyle away from the pitch. On January 1 1974, he played his last competitive match for Manchester United and spent the next decade drifting between football clubs in America, England, Scotland and Australia.

Away from football, Best’s playboy lifestyle ultimately degenerated into alcoholism, bankruptcy, a prison sentence and, eventually, a liver transplant. On November 25 2005, he died in London’s Cromwell Hospital after suffering multiple organ failure. He was 59 years old.

Best may be the most famous example of a floored genius who ultimately wasted his talent, but he’s certainly not the first person to fall victim to the trappings of fame. In honour of the third anniversary of the death of George Best's death, MSN News presents a gallery of ten people who, through wasted talent, extravagant lifestyles, volatile behaviour or simple bad luck, threw it all away.

Tougher Penalties ...

Tougher penalties for speeding and other "excessive behaviour" by motorists are to be proposed by ministers as part of a bid to cut road deaths.

Drivers who break the speed limit by a large margin could be given six penalty points, a consultation is expected to suggest, meaning they would be banned after two offences.

Other measures will target drink drivers and those who put lives at risk by taking to the wheel under the influence of other drugs.

Provisional Government figures showed this month that the number of people killed on the roads in spring this year fell by 20% compared with the same period in 2007.

There were 580 fatalities in April-June 2008 compared with 721 in the same three months last year, the statistics showed.

But Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick believes more can be done to cut the numbers further and will outline the proposals in a written statement to the Commons. They will be the subject of a three-month consultation.

BNP fear for their safety...

Thousands of members of the British National Party are living in fear after their details were posted on the internet. As well as names, the addresses, mobile numbers and job titles of members are all contained on the list. It shows the far-right BNP has soldiers, police officers, teachers, prison officers and even a vicar among its members. Party's spokesman Simon Darby said they had contacted bosses at a company involved with the blog to warn them of the consequences if it was not taken down. He said: "We made representations to the offices of the company involved, stating the implications of what was happening and it seems to have worked. In a statement on the BNP website, Mr Griffin described the publication as "a disgraceful act of treachery" by former BNP staff members who had subsequently been sacked. He said that he had lodged a complaint with Dyfed-Powys police on the grounds that the publication breached human rights and data protection laws. According to the BNP, the published list is based on its 2007 membership list although a number of names of people who were not or are not party members had been added. Earlier this year, the party said that it obtained an injunction at the High Court in Manchester banning any publication of the list. The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) last night confirmed that serving police officers were not allowed to be members of the BNP. "Membership or promotion of the BNP by any member of the police service, whether police officer or police staff, is prohibited," said Peter Fahy, Greater Manchester Police chief constable and Acpo's workforce development spokesman. "This is because such membership would be incompatible with our duty to promote equality under the Race Relations Amendment Act and would damage the confidence of minority communities. "Whilst the policy may have been controversial at the time it was enacted, in 2004, it has since been accepted by all staff and staff associations and remains unchallenged thus far."

Police officers wanted to place Baby P in care but were dissuaded by social services to return him to his abusive mother, it was revealed. When the toddler was admitted to the North Middlesex Hospital in June last year with non-accidental injuries, the police at the scene wanted to place the child in care.

However, a BBC Panorama documentary obtained a confidential police report that described "a frank exchange of views" between police and Haringey social services, who preferred to return him to his mother. The police eventually signed a care plan that allowed Baby P to be returned home, only to suffer further abuse. A later police briefing stated officers should be "more confident" in their role at case conferences and should not be overruled by another agency.

However, it was not just police who disagreed with social services that Baby P should be taken away from his 27-year-old mother, who has since pleaded guilty to causing or allowing his death. The documentary reveals that senior social worker Sylvia Henry, a team manager at the Tottenham social services office, wanted to place the child into care from as early as December 2006. Ms Henry had even found a foster home for Baby P, where he was placed for a short period of time. However, the placement was terminated when a member of Haringey's social service team sent him back to his mother.

According to Ms Henry, there was little evidence for prosecution and "reluctantly it was agreed that with changes to the home environment in place and all the support services in place with the family there were little grounds for Baby P to remain out of the care of his mother".

A 21-year-old mother, being held on suspicion of murdering her baby and toddler has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The bodies of Romario Mullings-Sewell, two, and his brother Delayno, three months, were discovered at a property in the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester just before 6pm on Wednesday. Officers were alerted to the grim find at the house in Kilmington Drive after reports of "concern for welfare" were made.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the children received fatal stab wounds to the chest, but a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said he was "unable to confirm or deny the reports". Meanwhile, the police response to calls before the deaths the children is being investigated by a watchdog. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has referred its handling of the investigation to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

An IPCC spokesman said: "We've had a referral and we're carrying out an assessment to see whether or not to investigate." The spokesman said there were two different accounts from the police about contact with the family prior to the deaths. He said: "We know there was some form of contact by the police. We need to determine what the police did in response to this contact. We're trying to get to the bottom of the police contact."

The house remains cordoned off with several police officers standing outside, while forensic experts carried out a detailed examination of the property.

A murder hunt is under way after a 15-year-old boy was shot dead in the street.

Police said the boy was walking along Caxton Street in Derby shortly after 9.15pm on Tuesday night when he was shot in the chest.

He was taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary but died a short time later from his injuries.

Police said armed officers were sent to the scene and that a helicopter and dog teams were also used to search for the boy's killers.

The scene of the shooting, which happened in the Sunnyhill area of Derby, is cordoned off while forensics officers investigate.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Goodman said: "This is a terrible tragedy in which a young teenager has lost his life. The public can rest assured that we are determined to bring the offenders to justice.

"The victim's immediate family have been informed of his death and are being supported by officers. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult and distressing time.

"I would urge anyone who witnessed the shooting, or anyone with information about the incident, to come forward."

Teenage girl wins right to die!

A terminally-ill teenage girl has won the legal right to die at home after attempts to make her have a heart transplant failed. Child protection officers used a court order to try to take Hannah Jones from her family and make her have surgery.

The 13-year-old, from Marden near Hereford, had been warned that the transplant itself might result in death. The teenager has a hole in her heart - meaning it can only pump a fraction of its normal capacity. Hannah said: "They explained everything to me but I didn't want to go through any more operations. I'd had enough of hospitals and wanted to come home." Hannah had been previously warned that she had only six months to live and that the only potential long term solution was a heart transplant. Her father Andrew, 43, told how he received a phone call one Friday night warning him that his daughter would be removed from the family unless they agreed to her having the transplant. But he persuaded the officials to speak to Hannah before taking any action, he said.

They are hoping she will live to see Christmas.

Hannah's mother Kirsty is a former intensive care hospital nurse. The teenager has a brother, Oliver, 11, and sisters Lucy, 10, and Phoebe, four.

British police had intelligence that Madeleine McCann could have been snatched by paedophiles. Official case files reveal someone connected to the ring took a photograph of the little girl on holiday in Portugal and forwarded it to a "purchaser" in Belgium, according to information gathered by the Metropolitan Police.

The intelligence was contained in an email dated March 4 sent to Leicestershire Police and forwarded to Portuguese detectives. It was in an appendix to a dossier of thousands of pages of police evidence in the Madeleine case made public this week along with CCTV images of possible sightings. A Met Police staff member wrote in the email: "Intelligence suggests that a paedophile ring in Belgium made an order for a young girl three days before Madeleine McCann was taken.

"Somebody connected to this group saw Maddie, took a photograph of her and sent it to Belgium. The purchaser agreed that the girl was suitable and Maddie was taken."

Hannie Wiechmann, 71, called police after seeing a child she believed to be the missing girl in May last year, but officers dismissed her concerns. Anna Stam, 41, had already said she reported speaking to a little girl who came into her Amsterdam party shop with a man, a woman and two other children. She said the girl called herself Maddie and stated: "They took me from my holiday." Asked about the woman accompanying her, the child replied: "She is not my mummy. She is a stranger, she took me from my mummy."

The story on everybody’s lips today and last night is Barack Obamas election win in the USA! This makes Obama the first black president in the United States.

His era-changing victory came as he swept a series of key battleground states, winning Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. Mr Obama led his Republican rival John McCain by 297 votes to 139 as he passed the magic number of 270 needed to win the presidency at 4am. The 47-year-old Illinois senator will be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on January 20 next year.

Hundreds of thousands of people erupted into loud cheers in and around Grant Park in downtown Chicago, the scene of Mr Obama's historic victory rally later on Wednesday. A President Obama, with his strong message of change, hope and unity, will herald a new era in US politics, bring a more multilateral approach to the world's challenges, and perhaps transform the issue of race in America.

He has pledged to tackle the global financial crisis from day one, end the war in Iraq and unveil an ambitious energy plan to tackle climate change.

The 47-year-old Illinois senator first appeared unstoppable as he swept a series of key battleground states early in the night and a victory in Virginia, declared by US TV networks at 3.58am, propelled him across the finish line two minutes in the 21-month £1.5bn election. Two minutes his expected win in California handed him 55 electoral votes. A jubilant crowd of thousands gathered on an unseasonably mild night, confident Mr Obama would win the presidency by dawn.

They reacted each time the Democrat was announced the winner in another state, with the cheers becoming particularly loud when Pennsylvania and Ohio fell.

Mr Obama won the town's poll by 15 votes to six for Mr McCain - a landslide victory after more than 40 years of Republican loyalty.

At the White House, spokeswoman Dana Perino said Mr Bush told dinner guests: "May God bless whoever wins tonight." It seems that blessing fell upon Obama!

....OBAMA victory!!!

Wednesday 5 November

Democrat Barack Obama stood at the edge of history, the likely victor in his marathon bid to become America's first black president. Republican John McCain stubbornly promised an underdog upset in Tuesday's election. Obama and McCain, separated by 25 years and a seemingly unbridgeable political gulf, had agreed on only one thing during the longest presidential campaign in U.S. history - their promise to slam the door on the era of George W. Bush. But they were deeply at odds over how to fix the nation's crumbling economy and end the 5 1/2-year war in Iraq, both issues inescapably linked the Bush's eight-year presidency. Record numbers of Americans were expected at polling stations across the nation adding their ballots to 29 million citizens who had already voted in 30 states. The early vote tally suggested an advantage for Obama. Sad news overlaid the campaign Monday when Obama announced the death of his grandmother, whose personality and bearing shaped him deeply. Madelyn Payne Dunham was 86 when she died of cancer late Sunday in Hawaii. "She's gone home," Obama said, tears running down both cheeks as tens of thousands of rowdy supporters at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte grew silent as he announced Dunham's death. The family said a private ceremony would be held later.

McCain, a 72-year-old four-term Arizona senator, ended the contest Monday with a frantic and grueling dash through several traditionally Republican states still not securely in his camp or even leaning to Obama. McCain stopped in Florida, Virginia, Indiana, New Mexico and Nevada. And he again passed through Pennsylvania, the only state that voted Democratic in 2004 where he still hoped for a win.

....Nephew's Body Found

Jennifer Hudson stood again in the Cook County medical examiner's office Monday afternoon, clutching the hands of loved ones as they identified the body of yet another slain relative—her 7-year-old nephew, Julian. Even before family members arrived at the morgue, they had been told that the three-day search for the 2nd grader had ended when his body was found slumped in the back seat of an SUV parked on a West Side street. Amid visibly shaken family members in the medical examiner's office, Hudson bowed her head as if in prayer, then looked up. "Yes, that's him," she told medical examiner officials as the family stood with her in an adjoining room and looked at a video monitor showing the boy's face. The toll was inescapable: The Oscar-winning actress had lost her mother, her brother and now her nephew to a murderous rampage.

Even as the family gathered to answer one painful question, police searched the Chevrolet Suburban to answer others. Officers questioned William Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Julian's mother, Friday night, but he stopped talking when police suggested he take a polygraph test, law-enforcement sources said. Balfour has not been charged in the slayings. Although the sources say Balfour remains the focus of the investigation, the motive remains murky. Police say there have been ongoing disputes between him and his estranged wife, Julia Hudson, and her family

Minor Earthquake!

A "minor" earth tremor has hit the UK, police said. Police received reports of the tremor affecting the area between Malvern and Worcester. A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "It was a very minor tremor. We have had no reports of any damage whatsoever.

"We have had about 15 to 20 calls from members of the public at most."A spokesman for the British Geological Survey said: "We have had quite a few calls reporting an earthquake so it seems like it is something…. The seismologists are looking in to it right now." A statement released by the BGS said the earthquake measured 3.6 on the Richter Scale. It said the earthquake's "locality" was Bromyard in Herefordshire.

According to reports given by residents to the BGS, the earthquake felt like "a thump as if someone had jumped off the bed upstairs". Another report described it as a "loud boom noise, as though something extremely heavy had fallen on the wood floor above my head". The statement from the BGS added: "The strength of the shaking has been described as moderate, enough to make furniture shake and windows or crockery rattle. Some reports indicate that people were woken from sleep and a few were frightened."

....X Factor results

Through to next week are... Eoghan, Alexandra, Ruth, JLS, Rachel, Laura, Diana and Austin.

It's a fair result tonight (finally). Scott and Daniel are in the final two and must choose their own song. Daniel has selected To Where You Are and wants to dedicate it to his wife. Scott is singing I Can't Make You Love Me, which he feels reflects his journey to this point.

Both guys give it all they've got and it's too close to call. Daniel's performance was powerful and emotional and Dannii and Cheryl are in tears afterward... Scott's performance was precise and passionate, but lacked the connection that Daniel had.

Louis ends up with the final vote when Dannii and Cheryl vote to save Daniel. Louis is filling up... "With the sing off, we have to go on that performance. There was one act who went through the motions and another... (he breaks down in tears) ...who sang every word like he meant it. I have to send Scott home, I'm saving Daniel!"

WOW! After all the jibes that Louis has given Daniel. When it came to the crunch he swallowed his pride and saved who he deemed, the best performer. Good for you Louis, at least you've got a little integrity.

Jennifer Hudson's Family members shot!

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson has been left 'devastated' after her mother and brother were found shot dead in her Chicago home.

Police are now searching for Hudson's seven-year-old nephew whom they believe was kidnapped from the house by a suspect in the killing.

Hudson's brother-in-law William Balfour is currently being questioned by police as a suspect, but he has not been charged.

The singer-actress, who appeared in Dreamgirls and the film version of Sex And The City, is flying back to Chicago from Florida.

Hudson has cancelled her trip to Japan on Monday, where she was promoting her new album.

A statement from her representative Lisa Kasteler said: 'We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson.

'No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.'

Detectives said the double murder was a 'domestic incident' that went horribly out of control.

Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson said Hudson's cousin entered the home around 3pm on Friday and after finding Darnell on the living room floor left to fetch help.

Sex Ed to Primary School Kids ...

Primary school children in England should be given basic sex education lessons, a Government review is expected to conclude. It is likely to recommend a shake-up of lessons to combat concerns that current teaching of the subject is too patchy.

Schools minister Jim Knight, who has been leading the review, is due to present the findings, as well as the Government's responses.

The review is expected to say that sex education should be compulsory in all schools. This could include teaching young children basic classes on the human body and relationships, with more detailed information being given as a child moves up through school.

Such measures are likely to be opposed by family campaigners and critics argue that sex education in primary schools risks sexualising children at a younger age. But he said it had to be done without "sexualising young people too early". International evidence suggests that teaching certain aspects of sex and relationship education before puberty has a "positive effect" on issues such as teenage pregnancy, Mr Knight said. Britain currently has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe and figures suggest that rising numbers of young people are being diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases.

Woman sees her husband die....

A British woman said she looked on in horror as her husband drowned on their honeymoon in Spain. Russell Hawkes, 39, died after being swept out to sea off Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol.

His wife, Danielle, 31, said she watched as efforts were made to save her husband. "I could see he was in a bad way," she said. "The paramedics managed to get a pulse when they arrived but they lost it immediately.

He was pronounced dead at the scene." She added: "Russell was a lovely man and a perfect husband. I'm still in a state of shock. I can't quite believe what's happened."

Mr Hawkes, originally from Basildon, Essex, lived with his wife of two months in Luton, Bedfordshire.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are able to confirm that a British national drowned on October 20 in Fuengirola. The next of kin have been informed. We are providing consular assistance."

16 year old stabbed...

A 16-year-old boy was stabbed to death outside a youth club in an unprovoked attack by a gang of up to 15 youths, police said. The victim, who has not been named, was with two friends, both aged 17, outside the Shrewsbury House Youth Club in Everton, Liverpool, on Monday night.

They were confronted by the gang and attacked after a short chase on foot, Merseyside Police said. The 16-year-old, from Old Swan, suffered fatal stab wounds. One of his friends was also stabbed but his condition is not considered life-threatening. The third boy suffered minor assault injuries.

Merseyside Police described the incident as "dreadful" and said the victim's family are "distraught". Two teenage boys were arrested on suspicion of murder close to the scene soon after the incident took place outside the youth club in Langrove Street at 8.40pm. Detectives said, however, that they believe the main perpetrators may still be at large. Chief Superintendent Steve Watson, area commander for Liverpool North, said: "The three victims had gathered outside the front of the club and were approached by a sizeable group of youths, about 10 to 15 in strength.  "The youths, without provocation, proceeded after a short foot chase to attack the three individuals. During the course of the attack the injuries were sustained."

....19 year old mum remains found.

Victoria Couchman described herself as a lover of comedy and romance films, clubbing and, of her musical tastes, "nethin wid a beat" on a social networking website. Victoria, who would now have been 19, is thought to have died around 18 months ago. It is unclear if she was ever reported missing.

Children playing in the Hastings woodland found Victoria's skull last Monday. Further forensic searches revealed other skeletal remains, including an upper left leg, pelvic bone and tibia. None appeared to have been buried. Her 45-year-old father was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday after medical records established that the remains were Victoria's. Police have been granted a further 36 hours to quiz him, as a fingertip search continues in Redgeland Wood, Hastings, East Sussex.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, but sources say that Victoria's upper left leg had been broken and pinned. One of Victoria's neighbours, Oliver Ellis, said: "Victoria was a dedicated mum who spent hours playing with her daughter. It can't be that long since she disappeared. I thought she moved out of her dad's house when she met someone."Of her father, who is known as Tony, another neighbour said: "Tony is a really nice guy. He helped us with our garden. He was always helping people out. Everyone sits out the front of their houses. It's quite a close street." Police would not comment on whether Victoria's daughter is safe and well.

Mobo's a Sham?

Last night saw coverage of the 13th Annual Mobo Awards at Wembley Arena.

It was hosted by former Spice Girl Mel B and hip hop legend Reverend Run of Run DMC.

Mixed views have arisen on the success of the show with more aimed at the negatives.

It seems much of the winners hadn’t bothered to collect their awards, and to make matters worse, even our own UK stars like Dizzee Rascal & Leona Lewis were missing.

The dissapointment was not hard to miss as the crowds made their feelings shown by booing loud when the lines 'Unfortunately he / she is unable to collect the award' was repeated over and over again.

Still there were great musical performances from John Legend, Estelle, Flo Rida, Jay Sean, Taio Cruz and Sugababes.

The Mobo Awards included categories for Best Hip Hop, Best International Artist, Best UK Male and Female, Best Song, Best Album and Best Video.

Steven Gerrard gives his all to keep his place on the England team...

Steven Gerrard has urged Fabio Capello not to give up on him after admitting he needs to be more consistent to keep his place in the England team.

Liverpool skipper Gerrard has regularly inspired his club to success, but has struggled to enjoy a similar impact at international level.

He has conceded that he has not always clicked with regular midfield partner Frank Lampard and the duo again failed to hit it off in Saturday's 5-1 win over Kazakhstan.

Reports have claimed Gerrard could be dropped for Wednesday's qualifier in Belarus and he has suggested he is fighting for his place in Capello's side.
